This series is an unfailingly satisfying statement of classic Soul Music. Don Robey wasn’t known as an honest and trustworthy operator, but he have an extraordinary ear for music. Robey’s vast musical empire began in 1949 and was to last for three decades. Although his labels were based in Houston and the early recordings were made there, by the sixties Robey would utilize recording studios throughout the U.S.A. As a result, an eclectic mix of styles without a defining sound. Don Robey’s Houston based enterprise has been poorly represented in the re-issue market, although Bobby Bland and some of O.V. Wright’s, Joe Hinton’s, gene Chandlers material has seen the light of day. Apart from this series most of the major labels have been digitized and therefore these compilations (eight discs) are most welcome. Enjoy this set with open ears.
