With 91 tracks on 5 CDs, the new compilation box set Oh Yes We Can Love, The History Of Glam Rock roams the grand history of glam rock from its early pioneers to global triumph in the early 1970s and far beyond. The visual counterpart to music is a 100-page booklet with rare single covers and a new essay by Barney Hoskins, the co-founder of the pop journalistic online archive Rock's Backpages and author of the book Glam. Glam rock combined the simplicity of rock'n'roll with the London fashion revolution of the 1960s. Simple, crisp guitar rock and catchy catchy music met with sultry theatrics, eccentric androgyny, and wonderful kitsch full of sex appeal. Even if purists locate the beginning of glam on Marc Bolan's 1971 Electric Warrior album and its end two years later, when David Bowie killed his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, glam actually goes a lot further. His roots are in the dazzling African American rock and roll heroes Little Richard and Chuck Berry and the cabaret songs of the 1930s by the British dramatist and composer Noel Coward. In addition to Bolan's "trashy" glam style and the artistically sophisticated glam of Bowie and Roxy Music, there was the "Glitter" by Gary Glitter, Slade and Suzi Quatro, which was incredibly successful commercially at the beginning of the '70s, and the dark, American glam of the New York Dolls. Superstars like Elton John, Kiss and the Rolling Stones picked up glam in the 1970s, and glam set the course in pop culture: punk, post-punk (especially Gothic), the glam punk of Hanoi Rocks and Marilyn Manson and the Brit pop from Suede and Pulp are unthinkable without him.

The liner notes that accompany this collection note that '70s soul music has never really gotten its due. One could argue that point for days, but hubris aside, there's no denying that Can You Dig It pays serious homage to the golden years of American soul. This box set contains 6 CDs and 136 cuts, 65 of which hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B and/or pop charts. As you'd expect with a project that mines such a rich era (the CDs are compiled chronologically), it represents a who's who of stars. Among the notables: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, James Brown, Chairmen of the Board, Laura Lee, Freda Payne, and Jean Knight. Lesser lights also get to shine, i.e., El Chicano, who deliver the salsafied hippie anthem "Tell Her She's Lovely." But let's be honest--the selling point is the hits, and from the uplifting "Ooh Child" to the sassy "Want Ads," if you grew up in the '70s (hands up), then these tracks are beloved. Sure, the hard-core fan will probably wish for more obscurities, and the exclusion of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and George Clinton is troublesome, but anyone wanting an at-home jukebox loaded with classic R&B will certainly dig this. I love this six CD box set, and I love the way it looks! Rhino has done a good job of capturing the look, sound, and feel of 70's soul music. I love how they made the outside of the box look like an old 8 track tape rack!

Little Richard - The Specialty Sessions 1959-1971

 

Richard Wayne Penniman (December 5, 1932 – May 9, 2020), better known as Little Richard, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He was an influential figure in popular music and culture for seven decades. Nicknamed "The Innovator, The Originator, and The Architect of Rock and Roll", Penniman's most celebrated work dates from the mid-1950s, when his charismatic showmanship and dynamic music, characterized by frenetic piano playing, pounding back beat and raspy shouted vocals, laid the foundation for rock and roll. Penniman's innovative emotive vocalizations and uptempo rhythmic music also played a key role in the formation of other popular music genres, including soul and funk, respectively. He influenced numerous singers and musicians across musical genres from rock to hip hop; his music helped shape rhythm and blues for generations to come. (Wikipedia)

"The Innovator, The Originator, and The Architect of Rock and Roll", Little Richard was one of the founding fathers of rock and roll. He made his reputation with Specialty Records, although he had recorded for other record labels before that, without success. Richard signed with Specialty in 1955 and became a big star upon the release of his first Specialty single, "Tutti Frutti". He had several other hits after that, but at the height of his fame in 1957 he became a born again Christian and quit performing rock and roll. He eventually did return to rock and roll, and recorded a few more songs for Specialty in 1964. This three cd box set includes all the songs Richard recorded for Specialty, plus some alternate takes, rehearsals and demos. These are among the most important recordings from the early days of rock and roll and also among the best. (Amazon)

This 6 CD boxset of Little Richard's Specialty Session contains many outtakes of his greatest hits..for instance, Long Tall Sally has different interesting alternate versions of the outtakes. They have the the outtakes and the master tracks in there. It's interesting to hear how he sings Long tally sally in a slower version. Heeby jeebies outtakes sounded like a Demo of Tutti Frutti. You can hear how they are doing the recording sessions with some false takes. If you take this boxset, you are missing out on the vocal genius of this legend's legend. His voice is at it's best here..Raw, powerful and Rock & Roll!!

Royal Memphis Soul is a superb, 95-track box set that collects all the highlights, both well-known and obscure, from the Hi Records vaults. Hi was one of the handful of great soul labels of the early '70s, featuring such artists as Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and Otis Clay. Green's popularity and reputation has tended to overshadow the other artists, who were all capable of delivering material of equal power, as this set demonstrates. In addition to all the hits, there's a number of neglected gems that hardcore soul fans will treasure. Certainly, the mammoth size of this box set means that it appeals primarily to special interests, but those collectors will find this to be an invaluable addition to their collection.
