VA - Royal Memphis Soul - 1996

Royal Memphis Soul is a superb, 95-track box set that collects all the highlights, both well-known and obscure, from the Hi Records vaults. Hi was one of the handful of great soul labels of the early '70s, featuring such artists as Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and Otis Clay. Green's popularity and reputation has tended to overshadow the other artists, who were all capable of delivering material of equal power, as this set demonstrates. In addition to all the hits, there's a number of neglected gems that hardcore soul fans will treasure. Certainly, the mammoth size of this box set means that it appeals primarily to special interests, but those collectors will find this to be an invaluable addition to their collection. VA - Trash Box ( 2004 )

The Trash Box is a 5-CD box set of mid-1960s garage rock and psychedelic rock recordings, primarily by American bands. This box set is similar to the earlier Pebbles Box (a 5-LP box set) and includes almost all of the same recordings in that box set (and in the same order), along with numerous bonus tracks at the end of each disc. Supposedly, the Trash Box collects the first five volumes of the CDs in the Pebbles series (i.e., those released by AIP Records, not to be confused with the 4 earlier CDs that were issued by ESD Records). Overall, there are 109 tracks in the box set (excluding the introduction and ending cuts) as compared to 101 songs on the individual CDs and 72 tracks in the Pebbles Box. Although most of the recordings on the Trash Box were released at some point on one of the individual Pebbles albums, several of the songs have not appeared elsewhere in the Pebbles series. Inexplicably, one of these songs is the well-known hit "I Fought the Law (but the Law Won)" by the Bobby Fuller Four, which is also included in the Pebbles Box – in place of the much rarer "Wine Wine Wine" by Bobby Fuller that appears on Pebbles, Volume 2. This collection isn't a lot of things! Firstly it ISN'T Pebbles, and the comprehensive notes explain exactly why it isn't Pebbles. It's a close relative of Pebbles - a first cousin rather than a brother though. It also isn't the 2004 ubik box set - it is the 2007 Hit Records box set. It is almost identical to the earlier release and very similar to the much earlier vinyl set of the same name. It isn't Pebbles volumes 1 to 5, although many of the tracks are from the Pebbles series. The compiler's notes explain how the tracks were chosen and why many favorites were left out (mainly better versions now on other compilations). It isn't a bootleg, although the tracks are taken directly from old vinyl singles without "official" sanction from the bands or the labels, so it falls into a rather grey area of legality. So just what is it you may well ask! Well, it's a good value, well produced box set of late sixties, rather obscure, American Garage Psych, and is based on the Pebbles Series. It could be seen as an American companion to the British Rubble collection. It has been carefully remastered, according to the notes, using parts of an old radio studio! Whether or not it's the same masters as the 2004 version I have no idea. The sound quality is very variable as the tracks are dubbed directly from vinyl, and the remastering is to the compiler's personal taste. I have some of these tracks on old vinyl Pebbles albums and they sound quite different to these. As sound quality is a very subjective thing I'll just say that this CD set sounds mainly OK to me.

Garage Psychedelic Rock

In the late 1970s and 1980s, the Moxie label was famous, or infamous, for its Boulders compilations of obscure 1960s garage rock. Boulders was to Pebbles what Pebbles was to Nuggets; an even rawer, more obscure approach to unearthing 1960s garage music, in both the rarities unearthed and the fidelity and graphics of the packages. The "Boulders" series it's compiled by Dave G. (R.I.P.) of Moxie records. It's a bootleg series from the first day, and all the the tracks are taken from 45's. In the mid sixties almost every town in the states had a record label who published all these teenager music later known as garage. Most of this labels never had the copyrights for this recordings because most of the artists never make this for profit. It was just music .

Back From The Grave

Back from the Grave is a series compilation albums of 1960s garage rock released by Crypt Records. The series originally consisted of eight LP records released between 1983 and 1992. Volumes seven and eight were double albums. Starting in 1994, the series was reissued on compact disc. Due to the longer playing times offered by CDs, the first seven volumes were contained on four discs, save for a few tracks that were omitted. In addition, the eighth volume of the series was released on CD in 1994, with four tracks omitted from the vinyl version. As such, this is the only CD reissue from the series that closely corresponds to its vinyl counterpart.

Unlike many garage rock compilations, the Back From The Grave series focuses exclusively on the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre. Psychedelic rock is categorically excluded. The series also includes very few pop or folk oriented songs. As a result, the albums are primarily populated by louder songs that are characterized by fuzztone guitars, rough vocals, and are clearly influenced by groups such as Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, the early Kinks, and the Pretty Things. The lyrics and performances tended to focus on anger, lust, and cheating girlfriends, matching the often chaotic music. According to the liner notes, the songs were recorded by American groups, between 1964 and 1967.

Teenage Shutdown Vol 01-15

Teenage Shutdown! is a series of garage rock compilation albums assembled by Tim Warren of Crypt Records, best known for his Back from the Grave series.

Most of the volumes in the Teenage Shutdown! series, gravitate towards the more raw and aggressive examples of the genre, but some volumes also reflect different aspects of garage rock, such as frat rock, soul-influenced rock, as well as folk rock and psychedelic.

The series currently consists of fifteen LP's and CD's, which unlike the Back from the Grave series, are identical in both formats. The first ten installments were released in 1998 and the remainder in 1999 and 2000. The first volume Jump, Jive and Harmonize, was culled from the collection of 45-rpm singles owned by Mike Markesich (colloquially referred to as "Moptop Mike").

The series tends to follow the packaging format employed by other garage compilation series such as Pebbles and Back from the Grave: each volume includes detailed liner notes, for this series written by Mike Markesich, which include basic information about each song and group, such as origin and recording date.The information that they present reflects thorough research, including information about the circumstances of the recordings and brief biographical sketches of the groups.

The various albums in the series occasionally include photographs of groups not actually included on the track listings, sometimes even going as far as to have such bands pictured on the front sleeves. Currently, there are fifteen volumes in the series.
